EURO 2012 is Europe’s most important and prestigious football tournament. It is also one of world’s most significant international sporting events. Millions will attend the matches and billions will watch them on TV.

Though football is the main event; the vibrancy, excitement and joy that Poland and Ukraine are set to experience will not only result from what takes place inside their stadiums. For one month in 2012, their restaurants and hotels will be filled to capacity; bars and clubs will overflow with crowds of partygoers full of contagious energy; and the  streets, parks and plazas of Ukraine and Poland will teem with elated fans from across the region and around the world. While championship level competition will assure the event’s success, the triumph of EURO 2102 will also largely be reflected in what takes place away from the football fields.

Of course, against any potential benefits of hosting such large scale events there are likely to be a series of health and safety issues, which can include risks sometimes associated with alcohol use, drug use and sexual activity.
